A Clinical Study on Vitiligo Patients


Abstract
Vitiligo is an acquired, disfiguring skin disease characterized by the loss of melanin, which results in depigmented areas of the skin. It affects at least 1% of the world's population. The pathogenestis of vitiligo has not been fully elucidated,
but
three possible origins, autoimmune, neurohumoral and self destruction of melanocyte, have been described.
Author studied 217 cases of vitiligo who had been visited at the Department of Dermatology, Seoul Red Cross Hospital during the last 2 years.
@ES The results are summarized as follows:
@EN 1)there were 133 females(61.3%) and males(38.7%).
2) The incidence was 4.5% among the out-patients of the dermatologic department.
3) The mean age of onset was 23.8 years(male : 22.3 years, female : 24.7 years) and the mean age of vistiting was 28.5 years(male : 26.3 years, female : 29.9 years).
4) Interval between onset and visiting was 4.8 years(male : 4 years, female : 5.3 years). In 87 cases(40.1%), the interval was less than l year and 109 cases(502%) was less than 2 years.
5) The most common site of initial involvement was the face(67.7%), trunk (60.8%), lower extremities (42.8%) and head(41.5%). The mucous membrane was involved in 28.6%.
6) The frequency of clinical symptoms and signs were as follows;
Early itching was 16.1%.
Family history was 7.4%.
Koebner's phenomenon was 23.9%.
Halo nevi was 11.5%.
Poliosis was 34.6%
7) The associated diseases with vitiligo were l case of psoriasis and l case of alopecia areata, and 4 cases of associated diabetes mellitus were also observed.
